Chenab River


About

·       The Chenab River is a major river that flows in India and Pakistan, and is one of the 5 major rivers of the Punjab region.

·       River Chenab originates from Lahaul valley of Himachal Pradesh Snow bound mountains and have copious discharge all the year round and flow with steep bed slopes in the mountain reaches with a series of loops and bends, which can be economically harnessed for hydel generation.

·       The river Chenab is formed after the two streams the Chandra and the Bhaga merge with each other. The Chandra and the Bhaga originate from the south-west and north-west faces of Barelacha pass respectively in the Himalayan canton of Lahul and Spiti valley in Himachal Pradesh.

·       Chenab flows through the Jammu region of Jammu and Kashmir, India into the plains of Punjab, Pakistan, before flowing into the Indus River near the city of Uch Sharif.

·       As per the Indus Water Treaty of 1960. The Treaty allocates the Chenab River to Pakistan. India can use its water for domestic and agricultural uses or for "non-consumptive" uses such as hydro power. India is entitled to store up to 1.2 million acre-feet (1.5 billion cubic metres) of water in its projects.

·       Important tributaries of Chenab - the Miyar Nalla, the Bhut Nalla, the Marusudar, the Ans, the Niru, the Tawi River.

·       The world's highest railway bridge over river Chenab in Jammu and Kashmir will be ready by 2021, and will connect the valley with the rest of India by train for the first time by 2022.

·       The bridge, which has a central span of 467 metres, is being built at a height of 359 metres from the bed level.
